BIOGRAPHY
Complex layers of whimsical surrealistic images visually
narrate stories of childhood in Judy Cook’s textile works. Cook uses multimedia surface design techniques
to bring her characters to life. Earning
a B.A. in Fine Arts from Evergreen State College, she focused on printmaking. Further expanding her studies of printmaking
to printing on textiles, Cook completed a two year Art Cloth Mastery Program in
San Antonio Texas.
Cook was selected as the 2007 Postcard Artist at the Nature
Conservancy Conference in Portland Oregon for her work Arctic Paradise. Her work is included in a number of private
collections. She is a member of the
Splash Gallery in Olympia Washington.
At the 2016 Houston International Quilt Festival, Cook exhibited 3 works as part of the special exhibit TEN VOICES FROM ONE: Work by the Art Cloth Mastery Program 2014, curated by Jane Dunnewold (November 2016).
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am fascinated with the complexity of layering images. When I discovered working with layers, the
skies opened and I found my passion. Adding
layers of different images until they combine to create a new image excites me.
Recently I have added more depth to my artwork
by telling stories on cloth. I combine layers
of imagery to create complex compositions that visually narrate my memories of
family and heroes of the day. Through
screen printing and surface design techniques my characters take on a life of
their own as they interact with the cloth, color, and each other to tell their
stories.
