Art Cloth Mastery Program 2014 (ACMP2014)

James Prouten

BIOGRAPHY

James Prouten has studied graphic design, interior, and landscape design at the College level, as well as traditional art forms at the Vancouver Island School of Art. Quilting led to hand-dying fabric and surface design in which he found his niche working with textiles. Prouten recently completed a two year Art Cloth Mastery Program (2016). Prouten has shown locally in his hometown of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

At the 2016 Houston International Quilt Festival, Prouten exhibited 3 works as part of the special exhibit TEN VOICES FROM ONE: Work by the Art Cloth Mastery Program 2014, curated by Jane Dunnewold (November 2016).

STATEMENT

My inspiration stems from a combination of history, particularly architecture and design, and current social issues. I typically use multiple patterns and repeated motifs to express my perspective of time and place.

My current series is focused on the issue of home affordability and our societal concept of home ownership as a mark of success. In my local area the price of a detached house is now unattainable for many working professionals. Is a house in today’s market a safe haven or a gilded cage? What price do we really pay?
